it's the little things:: home again

Happy Friday, friends! Each week that we do this link-up, I'm reminded just how blessed we are. Thanks for joining me in this exercise each week!

Here are my little things for the week.

(You'll have to forgive weird collection of photos this week. Apparently I ran out of space on my Blogger account? So I'm using some oldies cuz I can't stand a post without photos!)

Watching Si learn new things. I've said this before, but gosh, it's fun. He's learned so much in the past few weeks and it's amazing to just sit and watch him figure things out. He's started grabbing at his toys (and my eyeballs and hair and shirt.), blowing bubbles (which is the most hilarious thing to listen to) and is *this* close to rolling over. I feel privileged to watch his little brain cells hard at work.

Getting back in my studio again. I'm painting like a mad woman and loving it. At the moment, my fingers are covered in paint and it makes me feel like "me" again. The shop should be open soon and I can't wait to share everything I've been working on with you! (More on that next week!)

Cooking at home. After a few weeks away and a lot of time on the road eating out, it's more than exciting to be in our own kitchen again, whipping up tasty meals. We made tilapia piccata last night and have homemade barbecue chicken on the menu for this weekend. Hoping to share our barbecue sauce recipe with you soon!

Other random little things making me smile--  footie pajamas on my little boy, sneaking Christmas carols on Pandora (Chris refuses to listen to them before December starts!) and a tall glass of chocolate milk each day.

What about you? Got any "little" (or big!) things making your week? Post on your blog and link below!

my five tips for postpartum style

cowl:: H+M
peacoat:: Forever21
diver helmet necklace:: UE Jewelry
top:: Lauren Conrad for Kohl's
jeans:: Forever21
flats:: RocketDog

I'm finally back, guys. Ready to jump back in to style posts after a 3 month break. Not really an intentional break, but I'm just starting to get comfortable in my after-baby body. I'm slowly figuring out how to dress and still feel like 'me' and not just a frumpy mom. Silas is totally worth the changes in my bod, but becoming a mom doesn't mean having to lose my style too.

Today I want to share a few tips that have helped me to feel stylish while still getting used to this new body and role as a nursing mama.

{Accentuate your best parts} Highlight the body parts that make you feel good. About 10 days after Silas arrived, my legs and feet finally rid themselves of their marshmallow status. I just about wanted to sing the Hallelujah Chorus. Skinny jeans help accentuate the part of my body I feel best about.

{Check your baggy} I think it's tempting to wear really baggy clothes to hide the flabby tummy and other new after-baby developments. But too baggy can just look sloppy. A flowy and loose shirt like the one I'm wearing above hides the flub, but doesn't sacrifice style.

{Don't be afraid of the Spanx} I love my Spanx. They help define the waist that still hasn't fully returned and give me confidence in the form-fitting clothes I tend to stray from lately. I don't find anything wrong with smoothing out the bumps with Spanx, as long as you let it all hang out at home. ;)

{Happy it up}  Ultimately, it's about feeling great in the clothes you are wearing, even if your body isn't where you want it to be. For me, that means adding bright colors and sweet details in my outfits. Turquoise is one of my go-to happy colors and the bow on the back of my shirt has been making me smile all week. On days I feel frumpy, a bright color, fun pattern or favorite piece of jewelry does the trick to make me feel great.

{If all else fails, grab some lipstick}  My favorite shade these days is Clinique's Chubby Stick in Chunky Cherry. Lipstick can save pretty much any outfit.

Got any go-to tips for feeling fabulous in your clothes after baby?

Carseat SideKick giveaway!

You know what's really awesome? Having a problem and then someone emails you about a product that completely makes that problem irrelevant. And then they want to send you that product to try it out!

This happened last month. Chris and I were continuously frustrated with the straps in Silas' carseat. When we'd go to put him in, the straps would be trapped under his little body and the ensuing attempt to strap him in would make us all a little crazy.

This is where Carseat Sidekick comes in and saves the day! This genius device uses magnets to hold the straps out while you place your little one in the carseat. It's simple, affordable and incredibly helpful. Check out their product video here to learn more about how the Carseat Sidekick works.

Chris and I love our CarSeat Sidekick. It's made getting Silas ready to go so much easier. He doesn't fuss as much when we put him in and the process goes a lot faster too. I love the patterns and color choices they offer.

The awesome people at Carseat Sidekick are offering to give away TWO of their Sidekicks today-- one green and one pink!

I know you will love this product, so I'm super excited about this giveaway! See how to enter below!

it's the little things linkup!

 Sorry for the late post today! I may have forgotten about the link-up this week. :) Whoops. Anyway, here's a short list of some 'little things' that made me smile this week.

Fresh strawberries and blueberries on top of yogurt and granola. This breakfast continues to make my mouth happy.

Si just started sucking his two middle fingers last week. Cutest thing ever, I am convinced.

A big bow on the back of my shirt and getting back in to outfit posts next week. I'm excited to share some postpartum style tips that are helping me feel more "me"!

I'm having a hard time coming up with "little" things to share, because being home, most of the things making me smile this week are pretty big. I'm kind of in heaven with the cold weather, surrounded by family and eating all my favorite foods at home and in our favorite restaurants. Life is good.

What about you? Any little things in your week that have made you smile?

so you wanna print out your Instagram snapshots??

I've been wanting to print out some Instagram prints for awhile now. Especially after Si came along, I knew I had to get those snapshots in print. I researched each of your suggestions (thanks, by the way!) and finally ordered some prints last month.

Many of the places I researched offered prints that were smaller or larger than my preferred size. Many of them didn't specify what kind of paper they use and some were just too darn expensive.

What I like about Prinstagram is that it offers a ton of different options for printing and displaying your Instagram photos. I love the choices, from mini-prints, minibooks, posters and a new calendar option (which I might have to get in on for the New Year!).

I chose to go with the 4x4 square prints. The weight of the paper and the size of the prints is exactly what I was looking for. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my pictures printed just as I saw them on Instagram-- integrity of the colors and exposure was spot-on!

The only thing that makes me a tiny bit hesitant to order from Printsagram again would be the website. With a new baby, I don't always have an hour to sit down to choose and order prints. It took me about 3 tries to complete my order. I think the website is lacking an option to save your choices and continue your order at a later time. But I do know that they are still working on perfecting the site, so let's hope we get that option soon!

Besides that, I would absolutely recommend Printstagram prints. I get to look at them every day in our bedroom. I decided to display some of them in a grid over our bed.

Don't ask me how I did it-- I started with a little bit of measuring at the beginning and then I just eye-balled the rest. I was expecting it to come out all wonky-- thankfully it's somewhat even. ;) The painter's tape I used seems to be holding up really well-- the prints haven't peeled up or fallen off yet.

And Si loves to lay at our bed and stare at them, so Printstagram has his recommendation too. ;)

(( Psst.. I was offered a sample for review by Printstagram, but was not financially compensated for this post. As always, my words and opinions are my own!))

it's the little things:: Maryland edition!

Silas' blue eyes. I was certain that he'd have brown eyes like I do, but was hoping for blue or green. His sweet blue eyes get me every time.

Seeing my siblings with my son. Nothing like it.

I know everyone LOOOVES fall. But there's just something extra special about it when you've lived in warm climates for the past three years!

My baby sister Tori called me this morning and asked what she could bring me from Starbucks. Chatting with her over a cinnamon dolce latte was the perfect way to start the day.

Having Chris in the same time zone and able to chat and text on the phone while he's away is such a blessing. I'm thankful that he's not on the other side of the world with limited communication like his two deployments in Hawaii.

Lots of little and big blessings this week. What are yours??

home.

As I type this, I'm sitting in my parents' family room in Maryland. Yeah, I'm just about as surprised as you are. Chris got a call on Friday morning, before his graduation, with the opportunity to go help with some salvage work in New York City. Of course, he jumped on the opportunity to help out.

So, that's how I find myself in Maryland this week. We drove up over the weekend and enjoyed a night with family before he left for NYC on Tuesday morning.

I've felt ridiculously blessed this week. I get to spend time with family while Chris is serving in NYC. Silas gets to be smothered by aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents who love him. The weather is delightfully frigid and I can dress Si in really cute winter clothes. And even though my chosen candidate didn't win, I had the privilege of exercising my right to vote on Tuesday night. God is good.

And now it's bedtime for this tired mama. Nothing like crawling under the covers on a cold, rainy night.

it's the little things!

hey y'all! The Little Things linkup is back! I'm excited to start up these posts again and focus with you on the small blessings in my week. If you haven't linked up with me yet, don't be afraid to join in! Just post about the small ways your week was made better and link up with me each Friday!

(Just a reminder to please keep your linked posts on the topic of "the little things"!)

I only have Instagram pictures for you this week-- it's been a busy one. But I hope to pick up my DSLR more next week to record my little things.

Sushi night! We taught Chris' parents and Naval Academy roommate how to make sushi last night. We've been making our own sushi for a few months now and gosh, it's good. Especially that homemade spicy mayo. I got lots of requests for a recipe/tutorial on the blog, so keep an eye out for that soon.

Dates with my love. Chris' parents are in town, so we got two date nights this week. What a blessing. Alone time with him is precious these days and we savored every minute.

Happy colored canvases. I got some time in the studio this week and started working on my inventory for the shop-reopening! Tiny, bright-colored canvases have been fun for me to see on my studio desk after a long time of no painting.

Me time. I got to visit my hair salon and get my hair cut last night. I had a few minutes afterwards to stroll through Target and that alone time was pretty rejuvenating for this mama.

Silas' grandma.  I love seeing Chris' mom loving on Si. And it makes me so excited to introduce him to his aunts, uncles and cousins in Maryland when we visit in a few weeks. I love seeing our loved ones with our sweet boy.

So, what little things have been blessing you this week? Or what big things are making you smile and feel thankful?

bayou joe's

There's a tiny waterfront restaurant in Panama City that I've been hearing about for about 6.5 years. And I've been told many tales of their garbage potatoes. Back when Chris' family was stationed in Panama City, Bayou Joe's was one of their very favorite places to eat. And you must always travel by boat.

With Chris' parents in town, it was the perfect opportunity to visit. So, last Saturday morning, we buckled Si into his infant lifejacket for the first boat ride of his life, bundled up against the wind and headed out in a rented boat to Bayou Joe's. The weather was just the right amount of chilly, the sun was warm and I finally got to try those infamous garbage potatoes.
